Description
The Champagne saber is also known as a sabrage saber because of its specific utility, and is for all intents and purposes a cutting blade used exclusively in the spectacular technique of opening champagne bottles in ceremonial or festive settings that goes by the name, precisely, of Sabrage (from the French sabre= sabre). The use of the sabre to open Champagne became popular in Napoleonic France when the army visited aristocratic domains belonging to the empire. Given the many victories achieved by the army, there were many celebrations, during which it was the practice to open bottles by a convenient and readily available means, and the saber was the weapon of choice of the army's light cavalry, the hussars. Apparently, during one such celebration Napoleon himself said, "Champagne! In victory it is a merit; in defeat a necessity," thus encouraging its use and practice. The sabrage saber is slid along the body of the champagne bottle, toward the neck, with a sharp blow, and the force of the blade striking the lip of the champagne bottle neck is enough to break the glass and cleanly separate the neck from the bottle collar, which, together with the cork, is shot away by the force of the gas contained in the wine. A champagne sabrage is truly a very exclusive and exciting gift for a connoisseur of the prestigious French bubbly bottles, but not only that, because if the sabrage technique is properly applied, it is effective in opening any bottle of sparkling wine.
