In 1958, the Sumeire family who has been the owner of Font-Freye, since 1933, acquired this large estate near Pierrefeu, in the Var. Formerly the summer residence of the archbishops of Toulon, this property bears two names inherited from its long past: Château La Tour de l’Evêque and Château La Tour Sainte Anne. An exceptional basin planted with vines and surrounded by the Maures hills. In the hilly area of the Maurettes the terrain consists of shaley soils derived from Silurian stages phyllites near Hyères, and Permian red sandstone.
The 89 hectares are planted with vines that are on average twenty years old.
6.13 hectares are resting: the land left to lie fallow is planted with barley, a natural practice to eradicate nematodes; the barley is ploughed in to be used as green manure.
Soil analyses are conducted during the years when the land is resting to check that there are no nematodes. Since 2005, perpetuating the family tradition of not using any herbicidal chemicals, our commitment has been to convert to organic cultivation principles.
