Historically Grattamacco is considered to be a very important estate of Bolgheri area, not only because it is amongst the oldest here, but also because of its early influence on general development and winemaking style of entire area. The estate was founded in the end of 70s by Piermario Meletti Cavallari, an urban refugee from Bergamo, ready to follow market’s new interest in a new cradle of Cabernet Sauvignon in Italy. The first vintage produced was 1978 as a result of blending Cabernet Sauvignon with Sangiovese and Merlot. Estate is situated in a stunning location – on a hill overlooking the Tyrrhenian sea at a height of 100 metres, between Castagneto Carducci and Bolgheri. The farm covers an area of 34 hectares with almost half covered by vineyards and olive groves, the rest of the hill-side includes an extensive stretch of Mediterranean scrub. The vineyards, subdivided in 7 micro zones and featuring 3 principle types of soil, are situated in a natural cradle where protected from strong winds of the sea.
